How does Asutype work?
You start Asutype as a normal Windows application. Asutype works in the background of all other applications and continuously watches your typing.
- It watches out for mistakes that you may make such as mistyping (e.g. you slip your fingers and hit a wrong key), Caps Lock key accidentally turned on, un-capitalized names and sentences, misspellings etc. If the mistake is recognized (e.g. you have made it before), Asutype will correct it immediately and automatically like it had never happened. If the mistake is unrecognized (e.g. you make it the first time), Asutype will signal it, keep track of it and learn it so it can be fixed the next time if you make it again.
- It watches out for repetitive text patterns and automatically expands any predefined abbreviation into a longer text. You can assign a frequently used text such as your address, your signature, a difficult technical term, a common phrase etc. for a much shorter abbreviation and whenever you want to type the text, just type in the assigned abbreviation and Asutype will automatically replace it with the original text. For example, "tyvm" will be expanded to "thank you very much", "asap" will become "as soon as possible".
- It watches out for repetitive typing tasks and automates them, too. You can assign a series of commands or actions that you perform repeatedly or in a regular basis for a hot key and Asutype will carry out those tasks by answering the hot key. For example, you can use a hot key to duplicate a block of text, launch a search to a search engine, write an e-mail, copy and paste multiple clipboard items at the same time etc.
Because Asutype works with your keyboard, it works all the time and everywhere when you are typing such as writing reports, essays or diaries, emailing, participating in online forums, jotting down quick notes, blogging or chatting etc. You will have a unique and consistent software that protects you from making annoying typos, speeds up your typing, saves you effort and makes more efficient use of your time.

What's the difference between Asutype and my word processor's macros?
Asutype has three main features: it corrects typing mistakes as you type, reduces the number of keystrokes you need to type commonly used words and eases your copy/paste editing tasks. The middle one (reducing keystrokes) has the same purpose as your word processor's macros have.
Since Asutype works at the OS-level, it has the advantage that it is not available in a single word processor - it works everywhere. You can use it to ensure mistake-free and fast typing in all Windows word processors, e-mail composers, forums, chat rooms etc. and even in dialog boxes. Asutype is also designed to be much easier to use than the macros (which usually require programming).

Which version of Windows will Asutype work with?
Asutype works with all Windows 32-bit versions supporting Unicode. Literally, it works with Windows XP Home, Windows XP Pro, Windows 2003, Windows 2000 and Windows NT.
Can Asutype work with all Windows applications?
Asutype uses the Windows hooks mechanism to monitor your typing and generate keystrokes as needed into the Windows keyboard message queue. It should work well with all Windows applications which have a graphical user interface and use the standard Windows keyboard message queue.

What applications are incompatible with Asutype?
- Asutype may not work correctly with DOS and System Console windows.
- You may need to tweak Asutype to work with applications that do not understand the BACKSPACE key (such as some terminal emulators). Contact us if you have such an application for further details.

How many dictionary entries can Asutype support?
Theoretically the number is 2 billion, but practically it is much lower and depends on the amount of your free memory. The initial spelling dictionary has about 100,000 entries and the initial correction list has about 1,000 entries. The number of text shortcuts in a word expander file is limited only by your hard disk space.
What is the maximum number of characters that can be used with a text shortcut
32,000 characters (about 20 pages and it should be enough for most text). Contact us if you need more.

Is it possible to run Asutype automatically whenever I start Windows?
Yes. Right click the Asutype's running icon (near the clock), choose "Options" command, then click the "Applications" item on the left and finally check the "Launch Asutype automatically at startup" checkbox. You should note, however, that Asutype works best if it is loaded last. If you find that Asutype does not work correctly when initialized from the Windows Startup box you should launch Asutype manually.

Asutype doesn't work correctly with some of my applications!
Your application may have a same auto-correction feature such as AutoCorrect of MS Word, or QuickCorrect of WordPerfect. Be sure to turn off that feature in your application (to avoid your text getting corrected twice). If you are using Microsoft Word, choose AutoCorrect from MS Word's Tools menu and uncheck the "Replace Text as You Type" box.

How do I insert date/time information?
Use Field Code. Asutype also has some pre-defined date/time format for your choosing. See the online help file in your running Asutype (right click the program icon and choose "Help" command from the popup menu) for more information.

How can I stop Asutype after it has started inserting text?
Click the mouse somewhere.

I want Asutype replace my text immediately without waiting to a space or a punctuation mark as I type my password. What should I do?
Simple. Check the "No Trigger" checkbox when you define your boilerplate text.

How can I add more errors and their corrections to the dictionary?
You are welcome and encouraged to enrich both dictionaries in order to improve the program correction capability and make it best fit your typing style. You can:
- Use interactive correction mode and press 0 key whenever Asutype pops up the suggestion window.
- Review your recent errors or undone words and add new words to the dictionaries using the "Mistake Review" dialog box.
- Add words directly to each dictionary using the "Spelling Dictionary" and "Correction List" dialog boxes.

When I try to modify an existing shortcut, the cursor moves down one entry. If I click "Replace", I don't replace the shortcut I was working on -- instead it'll replace the next entry. My only option is to add a new entry; then I have a duplicate. Any help?
To modify an entry, please double click the entry before making any changes. Double clicking will lock the selection in the list and the selection will not jump around when you modify the content.
Or, you can make the changes normally (the selection may jump around) but at the end, hold SHIFT and click the entry you want to replace. Holding SHIFT will not update edit boxes with the content of the selected entry so you can replace the entry's content with the new one.
This issue is from the fact that Asutype now supports multiple entries with the same shortcut. For example, you can have two shortcuts:
- /sig/ -> your formal signature in your profession, and
- /sig/ -> your informal signature in blogs, forum discussions etc.
and if you type /sig/, Asutype will ask which one to use at run-time. (In the previous versions, you have to add the same shortcut in two different files to have the same effect).

Asutype doesn't work with my Internet Explorer, though it works with all other software. What's the problem?
Check to see if your Internet Explorer uses any incompatible BHO (Browser Helper Object - listed below) that prevents Asutype from monitoring your typing in IE. You can remove any BHO using this free tool: BHODemon 2.0. For more information about BHO, click here.
BHO that is incompatible with Asutype
- iesdpb.dll from PCTools Spyware Doctor
After removing an incompatible BHO, Asutype will work with your Internet Explorer smoothly as expected.

Suddenly Asutype stops working, although it's not disabled. What's going on?
This bug has been fixed in Asutype 3.3. Please re-downoad and re-install the updated version to fix this problem.

What's the difference between Asutype and Microsoft Word's AutoCorrect?
Asutype has the following advantages over MS Word's AutoCorrect wizard:
- Asutype supports unlimited number of AutoCorrect entries (while in Word, this number is limited).
- Asutype works much faster, especially when you have a large number of entries.
- Asutype works with all Windows applications including dialog boxes and protected forms.
- You can organize your keywords into separate boilerplate text files with Asutype.
- You can insert keystroke macros and field code in Asutype's text.
- Asutype stores its boilerplate text in files; if you want two PC's to use the same boilerplate text, you simply copy the file from one PC to the other PC or can even share it over a network. MS Word stores the AutoCorrect entries in system files; to transfer your AutoCorrect entries to another PC, you may have to write a macro, or install and run an add-on component that allows you to do that, or ask someone to help you since the documentation doesn't clearly tell you how to do it (and for a good reason: it isn't easy!).
Besides that, Asutype can automatically detect and correct your typing mistakes as you type and provide a mechanism to detect your frequently made mistakes effectively.

Can I use Asutype together with Microsoft Word's AutoCorrect?
We recommend you turn off MS Word's AutoCorrect feature while using Asutype. If you leave it on, your text may get corrected twice (one by Asutype and again by AutoCorrect) and that may produce unexpected results. You can disable Word's AutoCorrect Wizard as follows:
- Open Microsoft Word.
- From the Tools menu, choose "AutoCorrect" (Word 97) or "AutoCorrect Options" (Word 2000/2002).
- Unselect all the checkboxes there including the "Replace Text As You Type" check box.
- Choose "OK" to apply the changes.

How can I transfer my MS Word AutoCorrect entries into Asutype?
You can import the entries that are in MS Word as follows:
- Export the Word autocorrect entries to a text-only, 2-column tab-separated file by using a Word macro.
- Import the file into Asutype by choosing "Import..." button in the editing dialog box.
To export the autocorrect entries in Word using a macro:
- From the "Tools" menu, choose "Macro..." (Word 97) or "Macro | Macros..." (Word 2000/2002) command to create a new macro.
- Type in a new macro name (let's say ListAutoCorrectEntries) and choose "Edit" (Word 97) or "Create" (Word2000/2002) button.
- Type or copy the following lines to the newly created macro:
' macro starts here
Sub ListAutoCorrectEntries()
' for variable
Dim ACE As AutoCorrectEntry
' Create new document.
Documents.Add
' Iterate through AutoCorrect entries.
For Each ACE In Application.AutoCorrect.Entries
' Insert each entry name and its value on a new line.
Selection.TypeText ACE.Name & vbTab & ACE.Value & " " & vbCr
Next
End Sub
' macro ends here
- Choose "Run" command to run the macro.
- Close the macro window and return to the newly created document. In this document, there must be all the autocorrect entries listed.
- Save the document to a text only file by choosing "Save As..." command from the "File" menu, and choose "Text Only" in the "Save as Type" box.
(NOTE: If you're using Word 2000 or greater, you can also download, install and use Microsoft's AutoCorrect tool from the Microsoft website here to export AutoCorrect entries.)

Trailing spaces at the end of inserted text are not being transferred!
If you set Asutype to use the clipboard to transfer text, you should be aware that, by default, MS Word removes trailing spaces from text inserted through the clipboard. There are three ways to get around this:
- From MS Word's Tools menu, choose Options, select the Edit tab and uncheck the Smart Cut and Paste check box, or
- Right click the Asutype's icon, choose "Options..." command and click "Applications" tab, then uncheck the "Use clipboard to paste text" option, or
- Add explicitly a <space> to simulate trailing spaces in Asutype's text to type.

My registration code won't work, why?
95% of the people who say their code doesn't work have misspelled their name. The registration code uses the person's name to generate the code using an algorithm, so if the name is changed the code will not work. This is why we suggest using copy and paste to enter the data. The source information should come from your registration e-mail we sent you that contains your name and registration number. Do not lose this e-mail!
